Devon 'Ruby Red' Cattle

The Devon has been an integral part of the agricultural scene in Britain for centuries and is counted among our oldest breeds. Because of the deep rich colour, the breed has become affectionately known as the 'Red Rubies'.

The Ruby Red Devons flourish in 24 countries and top bloodlines are in demand as far apart as New Zealand, Brazil and North America. This is because they are adaptable and can thrive in the most extreme climatic conditions. The Pilgrim Fathers took Ruby Red cattle from Devon when they travelled to North America in 1627.

Ruby Red Devons are unique. As one of the more ancient breeds they incorporate some of the best qualities of other beef breeds - their extreme hardiness, quick rate of growth and production of an excellent carcass.

Originating from Exmoor and North Devon, the Ruby Red was the mainstay of the herds in Devon and Somerset for several centuries until the black and white cattle of the dairy sector dominated. Devon Ruby Reds are in revival and becoming more & more popular.

The Ruby Red is a dual-purpose breed. They are well adapted to the upland and moorland of Devon where it has the ability to convert poor grazing into excellent beef, yet still produce quality milk. Up until the 1950's they provided milk which was made into Devonshire cream and butter in farm dairies. The cows calve easily and are good mothers, with plenty of milk to rear a good calf with good fertility.
