WYANDOTTE (BANTAM)

This is a miniature breed rather than a true bantam as there is a large counterpart. The bantam Wyandotte (why-an-dot) was developed from the large fowl and were already established at the start of the C20th.   Like the large version, the bantam was developed in the USA.   They are lovely birds and deservedly popular.

They are docile, friendly, easy birds, graceful and active.   They are easily tamed and become quite trusting.   Flying is not a priority with these birds and they do not need a high fence to keep them in.   There is nothing straight about them being well rounded with a saddle back.   The body is short, deep & rounded; the back short & broad sweeping up to a medium sized, spread tail.   The head is short and broad with a rose comb.   Legs are yellow as are the beaks.   Hens may lay tinted eggs a year and are reliable broodies that make good mothers.

There are many different colours - more than two dozen - and they all have a rose comb & yellow legs.   Some colours are rarely seen.

We have six varieties:

Barred:   Feathers are a white with a bluish tinge, barred with narrow bands of black that has a green tinge that are equal breadth & sharply defined.

Black:   The whole bird is black with a green sheen.

Blue Laced:   The ground colour of the feathers is red brown with the edge marked out in blue.

Buff Laced:   The ground colour of the feathers is rich buff with the edge marked out in white.

Gold Laced: The ground colour of the feathers is rich gold brown with the edge marked out in black.

Silver Laced:   The ground colour of the feathers is silvery white with the edge marked out in black.
